Solar and Wind Power Awareness: Part 2

——Off-grid solar and wind power generation

It is well known that solar and wind power are viable sources of electricity. In reality, many regions and facilities face challenges in accessing reliable power—or simply lack access to conventional fossil-fuel-based electricity altogether. In such situations, solar and wind energy emerge as the optimal and most readily available solutions.

The off-grid power generation principle of solar and wind energy involves harnessing solar and wind power to generate electricity simultaneously while directly using the power produced. Any excess electricity is stored in batteries, which then supply DC loads directly during nighttime or when power generation is unavailable. A controller and inverter device are used to convert the stored DC power into AC electricity for broader use. AC 220V or AC380V Electricity powers AC loads and can also be used in conjunction with diesel generators to form a wind-solar-diesel hybrid power system.

Components of off-grid solar and wind power generation systems: solar panel arrays, wind turbines, solar charge controllers, wind power controllers, energy storage batteries, and inverters (either line-frequency or high-frequency inverters), among others.

The basic principles behind the design of off-grid solar and wind power generation systems:

Step 1: Determine the load's power consumption, including the load's electrical power rating, operating voltage, operating frequency, and the daily time periods during which it is used.

Step 2: Depending on the project location, assess the local solar irradiance and wind resources to determine whether to opt for solar power generation, wind power generation, or a hybrid solar-wind system. (Note: Due to differences in latitude, longitude, and local terrain, solar irradiation and wind resources vary from place to place.) )

Step 3: Design the storage capacity of the solar battery based on local natural resource conditions or the electricity requirements of the equipment in operation.

Step 4: Choose a solar charge controller, wind charge controller, or a wind-solar hybrid controller, along with an AC sine-wave inverter.

Step 5: Based on the site conditions, design the installation method for solar photovoltaic panels, the placement or setup of wind turbines, and the indoor equipment room layout—including the installation of batteries, solar PV charge controllers, wind power charge controllers, as well as smart PV combiner boxes, inverters, and AC distribution cabinets.

Step 6: Design the solar photovoltaic DC cables, determine the cable gauge and routing for wind power generation cables, as well as the routing for AC power supply cables.
